1961-1973
Document Cases: RJL 6/1

Former U.S. Senator and Vice President, Richard Nixon, lost to John F. Kennedy in a close Presidential race in 1960. He proceeded to run for governor of his home state of California in 1962. Mr. Nixon was defeated in that election by Edmund "Pat" Brown, but returned to politics in 1968, when he was elected President of the United States and re-elected in 1972.

The bulk of the documents in this record group pertain to either the 1962 gubernatorial race in California or the 1968 and 1972 Presidential races. Articles and correspondence make up most of the series content, however, there are a few Party newsletters and press releases. What is notable about the gubernatorial article series, is that it depicts and illustrates (1) the California political climate, with emphasis not only on Nixon, but on John and Robert Kennedy and Pat Brown as well; (2) the California '60s culture climate, with mention of the "Nixonettes" and tea parties with Patricia Nixon; and (3) the United States foreign policy climate, by promoting an indomitable fight against the "Reds".
