The idea behind the Campus Reading Celebration is to invite all members of the campus community (students, faculty, staff and administrators) to read the same book and to talk with each other in both formal and informal venues about the book throughout the academic year. By having the entire campus community read the same book we will all have a common intellectual experience that can generate shared discussions of a book we've all read.

The book for the sixth annual Campus Reading Celebration this spring will be Creating a World Without Poverty, by Muhammad Yunus. What if you could harness the power of the free market to solve the problems of poverty, hunger and inequality? As founder of Grameen Bank, Nobel Peace Prize-winner Muhammad Yunus pioneered microcredit, the innovative banking program that provides poor people-- mainly women-- with small loans they use to launch businesses and lift their families out of poverty. In Creating a World Without Poverty, Yunus goes beyond microcredit to pioneer the idea of social business- a completely new way to use the creative vibrancy of business to tackle social problems from poverty and pollution to inadequate health care and lack of education. Yunus’ “Next Big Idea” offers a pioneering model for nothing less than a new, more human form of capitalism. (description from Creating a World Without Poverty, back cover).
Copies of Creating a World Without Poverty are available at Broome Library. Books are being provided free to the campus through fundraising efforts of the CSUCI Foundation. Students, Faculty, Staff, and community members are invited to read the book during the semester. Faculty are encouraged to incorporate the book into their syllabi, and to encourage or require students to attend Yunus’ presentations in February. The centerpiece of the Campus Reading Celebration will be a visit by author Muhammad Yunus on Friday, February 26, 2010.
